While global population has increased threefold during this century, from 2 billion to 6 billion, the population of India has increased nearly five times from 238 million (23 crores) to 1 billion in the same period. India's current annual increase in population of 15.5 million is large enough to neutralize efforts to conserve the resource endowment and environment. In India about two- thirds of people depends on agriculture as livelihood. But still it is a big challenge to bridge gap between growing population and demand for food.

 

In this situation like shrinking land, depleting water resources and increasing energy crisis, the challenge of the new millennium is to increase biological yields to feed the ever growing population with out spoiling the environment around us.

 

India has potential to overcome this problem provided with new policy changes and good infrastructure support from the government to strengthening proactive synergies among the various sectors which influences field of agriculture and rural development.

 

The following are the suggestions towards achieving sustainable agriculture, rural development and food security.

· Promote sustainable agriculture and rural development.

· Promote equitable distribution and access.

· Secure food security for all.

· Strengthen extension and capacity building mechanisms

· Promote awareness and education activities.

· Ensure appropriate application of research, science and technology.

· Recognizing the value of agricultural biodiversity.

· Relook at agriculture and related policies.

· Create favorable economic climate.

· Ensure participation at all levels and protection of rights.
